ASHER BLANK (@asherbl_nk | he/him | William Asher Cabaniss) is a music-maker and community organizer. Both of these practices are rooted in the world of group vocal music, where he writes and directs work connecting a diverse set of group singing traditions within the form of contemporary choral music and a cappella.
Inspired by music-makers like Steve Reich, Bobby McFerrin, and Caroline Shaw, he is slowly merging this music with a parallel world of angular, texturally-rich electronic music, creating pieces that allow group vocal music to move fluidly between the energies of house, ambient, and experimental music.
He lives and works in Los Angeles where he leads Ephemeral Choir, an ever-changing, publicly-accessible ensemble and vocal music incubator. He also collaborates with NYC-based Gaia Music Collective. He is an alumnus of the University of Chicago a cappella group Voices in Your Head and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, and has taught at the LA summer youth program A Cappella Academy.
